OPERATION
This new technology integrates all the electrical parts of the house / building a wireless network without complicated programming and without wires. Any Z-Wave device can be effortlessly added to the network. Various other devices that are incompatible with the Z-Wave technology can become compatible simply by connecting them to an auxiliary Z-Wave device. In seconds, your device is connected to the network and it can communicate wirelessly with other devices and controllers of the wireless Z-Wave network

Below we'll examine briefly various categories of Zwave products in our eshop and their role in a Zwave system.

 

CONTROLLERS
Z-Wave wireless control centers are the heart and centre of a Z-Wave network. It is possible to configure and run a Z-Wave network solely on a Z-Wave capable remote control but certain functions such as time and event triggered actions can only be accomplished with a standalone wireless control center or a PC running a home automation software.
Wireless control centers are permanently online but only take a minimum of energy for operations. They are controlled either by local push buttons or typically using a web browser via Ethernet. The web interface also enables a remote access from a mobile phone such as an iPhone.
Wireless control centers operate as static controller and are best suited to control battery-powered devices and maintain the stability of even large network configurations.

POWER PLUGS
Electrical switches and dimmers control electrical loads in general, and lamps in particular. Electrical switches typically switch all kinds of loads but the application of dimmers is restricted to lamps.
Depending on the dimmer method only resistive incandescent or a broader range of inductive and reactive loads are dimmable. Wall outlet plug-in devices are installed very easily without any further electric knowledge by just plugging them into the wall outlet. Wireless wall plug-in devices receive Z-Wave signals from controllers and switch their load accordingly.

SWITCHES & DIMMERS
Electrical switches and dimmers control electric loads in general and lamps in particular. Electrical switches typically switch all kind of loads but the application of dimmers is restricted to lamps. Depending on the dimmer method only resistive incandescent or a broader range of inductive and reactive loads are dimmable.
When installing an electrical switch or dimmer the wiring system is important. There are 2-wire and 3-wire systems. In a 2-wire system the pattress box offers only the incoming and the outgoing wire. No neutral wire (blue) is available. In order to power the electronics of the switch or the dimmer a minimum load needs to be connected to the device. In the 3-wire system the neutral wire (blue) is available and connected to the device.
The device is powered from the incoming wires regardless of attached loads. Switches or dimmers are either provided as pattress box insert without any local operation or they are wall switches with local switching paddles. In case of the manufacturer Popp the box insert can be completed with a switching paddle and a mounting frame and becomes a fully functional wall switch with local operations. Wall switches and wall dimmers typically receive Z-Wave commands and perform local switching and dimming.
They are controlled by a Z-Wave controller and powered by the 230 V they are switching or dimming. The following table gives an overview on which switch and which dimmer is suited for 2- or 3-wire-systems.

SENSORS
Wireless sensors are Z-Wave devices, which transmit certain environmental values or certain behaviour to a wireless control centre. They also control other Z-Wave devices directly, using the association function of Z-Wave. An example of such an association is the switching of a light with a motion detector.
Sensors are typically battery-powered devices with AA or AAA or CR2 batteries which are very common. Depending on the radio transceiver utilization the units have a battery lifetime between one and three years.
Particularly of interest are multi-sensors, where multiple sensor values such as temperature or humidity are made available from one device via Z-Wave.

WINDOW BLINDS
Window and door blinds (shutters can be controlled wirelessly via Z-Wave. To do this the conventional analogue dual paddle (Up/Down) switch for motor control is replaced by a Z-Wave enabled wall switch or insert.
Window blind controls are typically offered as flush-mounted socket with switching paddles for local operation or as pattress box insert.
Individual blinds or a group of blinds can be controlled wirelessly. Together with a wireless control centre the blind control can be made dependent on certain day times such as sunset and sunrise.

LOCKS
ZWave technology makes possible to anyone to connect to his home and control the electronic lock from anywhere in the world through the Internet or his mobile phone internet provider. Of course, you can always use your keys to open the door. No more keys under the doorstep or the pot with the flowers...
Associate the lock with the door sensor, the lights, the camera, the siren and start building your security system tailored to your home and actual needs.
Install a ZWave wireless bell and you can monitor all visitors while you are away (associating the camera pictures with the door bell).
Finally, be informed of all the above through mail in your mobile phone.

THERMOSTATS
Heating controls allow the individual control of heating behaviour per heating device or room and as function of time. Heating systems are typically realised as wall-mounted radiators or floor heating. The wall radiators are controlled by radiator thermostats (TRV= Thermostatic Radiator Valves) on each radiator while floor heating systems typically use a thermostat on the wall of the room to be controlled. These thermostats communicate with the floor heating via electrical wires.
A time-driven regulation of heat per room helps to dramatically reduce energy, since rooms are only heated when really needed. Via Z-Wave networks the control of the heat and air condition can be centralized and even accessed by a wireless thermostat remotely. An example is a change of the heating state if a user comes home earlier than expected.
